“Before and After” is the first album of these sweden musicians which was released in 2004. In addition, it should be noticed that DrAK is a very amphibolous band. First of all, because all of it’s concept is like the early art of “The Sisters of Mercy”. The alike elements can be seen for example in voice of vocalist and in the sound of the drum-machine which someone maybe would like to call “Dr. Avalanche”. Perhaps only “The Merry Thoughts” band with it’s first LP can be as similar to “The Sisters” as the “Dr. Arthur Krause” is. Anyhow in such compare “Dr. Arthur Krause” has it’s own dignities. In the most of the tracks the sweden musician could save that inimitable atmosphere of 80’s and also show that in our times oldschool goth was far from it’s death. Now briefly about the interesting moments on the album. In the 1st track “Inhuman Liberty” in the beginning there is very interesting guitar sound which reminds of the prelude of “First And Last And Always” track of “The Sisters of Mercy”. In other words, the judges of the 2nd wave goth will be happy to hear it. “Rare Flowers” and “Violence” tracks are also good. In the last one there is really interesting & old-fashion electro programming. It sounds rather nice! Some of the listeners certainly like “Why do you love me” song. Although the sound of it is similar to the goth-rock classic songs, this track by it’s atmosphere is close to some rock'n'roll compositions of 70’s. Lastly, let’s mark the “Breaking in Two” track. It’s rather dusky with affective vocals. The other tracks of the album are not bad too, but they are not special. So, “Before and After” LP can be considered as rather good album that consists of the most interesting elements of early “The Sisters of Mercy” and the 2nd wave goth-groups. This phrase characters all of the dignities and defects. Among the dignities there is nostalgic memories of 80s and good renovation of oldschool music. Among the defect first of all that fact that there is nothing completely new in the sound. So, this album should have those, who are fond of old-fashion post-punk or goth-rock. For other people it won’t be so interesting. (7.5/10)

It’s funny that bands who got inspired by music from the eighties still sound as they have the same production as back then. Dr. Arthur Krause is totally inspired by The Sisters Of Mercy (even in choosing their name) and don’t use modern influences like the 69 Eyes. Although there is a guitar out of tune during ‘Nastassia’ the rest of ‘Before And After’ is good enough to compete with the current Gothic rock scene. The almost moaning voice, the recognisable guitar riffs, the dry sounding drums and the old-fashioned keyboard sound create the atmosphere of ‘those roaring eighties’. It’s nice to hear a recognisable guitar sound again. Listen for instance to the danceable and sing along songs ‘Rare Flowers’, ‘Take Me Hard’ and the ballad ‘Dreaming’.

Vorher ist nachher, und so klingen Schwedens Dr. Arthur Krause denn auch wie die Reinkarnation von Andrew Eldrichs Gnadensschwestern. Doch wo Meister Eldrich schon längst mit der Szene gebrochen hat, die ihn einst gross gemacht hat, da setzen die Schweden auf den puren Retrotrip, was in dieser musikalischen Konsequenz derzeit wohl einmalig ist. Der wummernde Bass liefert im Verbund mit einem Drumcomputer das Fundament, auf dem sich der grabestiefe und häufig gebrochen wirkende Gesang erst so richtig entfalten kann. Auch wenn sich die Phrasierung des Sängers und das Songwriting an sich deutlich an den Frühwerken der Sisters orientieren, die Authenzität und die Ernsthaftigkeit aller zehn Songs sei hier zu keiner Zeit in Frage gestellt, und selbst ein möglicher Plagiatsvorwurf greift vollkommen ins Leere, denn welche Band ausser Dr. Arthur Krause gibt sich in dieser Konsequenz schon solchen Retrosounds hin, wenn selbst das grosse Vorbild mit seiner eigenen Vergangenheit gebrochen hat? „Inhuman Liberty“, „Black Hard Hands“ oder „Fadime“ jedenfalls sind Goth-Hymnen par excellence, bei denen sich vor dem geistigen Auge des Zuhörers die Nebelschwaden und das Publikum im Mehl bestäubten Desperado-Outfit in sanfter Umklammerung im Zwielicht der spärlich beleuchteten Bühne vor und zurück bewegen. Ein gnadenlos geiles Retro-Werk der Schweden.

Det är märkligt att ett band som SISTERS OF MERCY fortfarande har ett stort inflytande på dagens gothscen. Den bästa plattan "First and last and always" släpptes så tidigt som 1985. Än idag låter många artister i genren förvårnansvärt likt. Då menar jag inte bara Andrew Eldritchs karakteristiskt djupa och bedrövade stämma - lätt att härma men svårt att göra bättre - utan även låtupplägg, idévärld och tempo. Det måste betyda att SISTERS OF MERCY kom väldigt nära att idealsound. Det är tunga matande basslingor, enkla och distinkta trumtakter, vemodigt vackra keyboards eller gitarrmelodier i bakgrunden och vers, vers räfräng. Just refrängen matas och matas in till evigheten, vilket gör att musiken har potensial att leverera listettor samtidigt som den snabbt blir uttjatad. Vilket ofrånkomligt leder till att det hela tiden finns ett sug efter nya artister med liknande anslag. Nya ansikten, men med samma grundidé.

Göteborska DR. ARTHUR KRAUSES "Before and after" är en alltigenom älsklig upplevelse. Som en skinande, silverfärgad gammal engelsk lyxbil med polerat krom och vaniljvodka i minibaren. Inga förädiska taktbyten, inga okontrollerade utbrott, inga avsteg från ritualen.

I stället får vi en djupt konservativ, närmast reaktionär, form av goth som troget och högaktningsfullt vårdar, dyrkar, odlar och vaktar den kristallklara, äkta känslan av att någonting är fel. Doktorn sjunger i en deklamerande ton det otroligt höga värdet av allt som har förlorats, allt som förloras i nuet och allt som kommer att förloras i den eviga förlustmatchen mellan livet och döden. En elak dyterhet i en hemsk malström av underbar negativism.

"Before and After" è il debut album di questo oscuro combo gothic-rock che risponde al nome di Dr. Arthur Krause, formati da The Lady, il nuovo arrivo Peter Hageus e, appunto, dal fondatore Dr. Arthur Krause. Il gruppo nasce nel 1999, dai Pet Sematary, che nel 2001 decide di cambiare nome in Dr. Arthur Krause e dopo 3 anni esce questo loro debut album per la svedese M&A. Che dire di "Before and After"? sicuramente un gran bel disco, un disco che in un solo colpo richiama i Sister of Mercy e i Clan of Xymox (dell'epoca Xymox) ..e con questo potrei aver detto tutto, e invece no, questo disco risulta oggi, nel 2004, un disco gradevole e per nulla "clone", anzi contiene molte buone idee e le canzoni risultano allo stesso tempo fortemente 80s, ma da quel sapore oscuro e sempreverde che fa di un buon disco goth-rock con i suoi riff, i suoi giri di basso, i suoi synth, le sue drum machine (Yamaha RX5), le sue tenebrose voci, qualcosa che rimane nel tempo.. "Before and After" è un disco fatto bene, è molto bello e può sicuramente piacere a tutti i nostalgici e agli appassionati, i Dr. Arthur Krause hanno fatto un bel lavoro e le canzoni sono ben strutturate e perfettamente composte, e i riferimenti ai SoM o ai CoX possono solo rendere il tutto più appetibile.. quindi, mi sento di consigliarlo a tutti gli amanti del classico, tenebroso e romantico goth-rock!! Canzoni preferite: "Violence", "Inhuman Liberty" e "Rare Flowers"!

Le rock gothique des années 80, ses rythmiques implacables et ses voix théâtrales, constituent assurément le fond de la culture de formations telles que Dr Arthur Krause. A la différence des formations 90's, telles Love Like Blood ou Dreadful Shadows, Dr Arthur Krause n'a pas le désir de faire "avancer" artistiquement le Gothic Rock, se rangeant plutôt dans la fixation de ses canons. Là où la dernière génération allemande de groupes de rock laissait les couleurs gothiques imprégner un univers plus ouvert (au Metal en particulier), y gagnant ainsi en souplesse, ce premier opus de Dr Arthur Krause revient aux fondamentales. Et carrément : tournures de guitares minimales et héroïques, batterie électronique, basse et claviers en contrefort et bien entendu… voix d'outre-tombe. Tout est là. En dépit des dires du Docteur, de la tonalité générale des morceaux transparaît avec insistance l'influence de groupes tels The March Violets, mais aussi et surtout les inévitables Sisters Of Mercy. La mécanique de Dr Arthur Krause est très efficace, certes. Mais elle n'est pas insondable, et possède un peu moins de mystère que celle de ses aînés. Fatal. Faire renaître le Gothic Rock de ses cendres, l'idée n'est pas neuve. Si des groupes tentèrent dans les années 90 de redonner vie au genre d'une manière aussi crûe (avec un résultat mitigé mais aussi de très beaux moments), il s'agit entre autres de The Merry Thoughts ou, dans une veine plus osée, The Wake. Personne n'a fait long feu, à ce rythme. Aujourd'hui, c'est au tour d'un trio sûr de ses choix (dont le leader se looke très "Eldritch", période actuelle) de prolonger une certaine tradition. Et les plus nostalgiques d'entre nous – ne mentons pas - ceux qui font encore tourner en boucle "Floodland", succomberont à nouveau aux charmes pourpres de ces guitares automatiques, y retrouvant des points de repère archi-usités. Ce disque est donc ambivalent, comme tous les enregistrements de cette facture : il fait appel à des vibrations qui trouvent bel et bien une résonance en nos cœurs et esprits, mais… sans créer de vraie surprise. Se retrouve ainsi figé ce qui restait à figer du Rock Goth, comme si son avenir n'était plus envisageable et que l'on doive se contenter de cette tâche indélébile que laissa son encre noire sur le papier de nos vies. On ne s'y résoudra pas même si, de toute évidence, ce type de disque a de quoi séduire : il y a là quelque chose qui refuse de mourir et c'est peut-être aussi en raison de cela que nos cœurs n'ont pas flanché depuis le premier opus des Sisters Of Mercy, "First & last & always". Alors, qu'ils s'épanchent quelque instant sur ce "Before & after" typé et bien fait n'aura rien de surprenant, ni de condamnable. A moins de s'y enferrer, ce qui reste un risque : car au final et en dépit de toute considération passéiste, cette collection de morceaux se révèle d'une efficacité... redoutable.

Die Sisters Of mercy lassen grüssen. Wer nicht auf die Hülle schaut, würde denken ein Sisters Of Mercy Album zu hören, das er noch nicht kennt. Deer Bandname ist so bescheuert, das man ihn sich merken kann. Die Musik ist Gothic Rock sister´scher Prägung, wie es besser nicht sein könnte. Das gefält mir schon deshalb gut, weil ich nach "First and Last and Always" den Sisters oder das was Eldridge dafür hält / bezw. darus gemacht hat, nichts mehr abgewinnen kann. Wer die alten Sisters liebt, der wird dies Albeum vergöttern. Es ist das zweitbeste Album der Sisters, nach First and Last and Always, leider haben die Sisters Of Mercy es nicht aufgenommen

Att försiktigt viska plagiat i samma andetag som Dr Arthur Krause kommer på tal vore en underdrift av världsrekordmått. Plastiga trummaskiner och en röst som är så nära den av herr Eldritch, att det närmast är skrämmande, är på plattan 'Before and After' ett faktum. Göteborgsbandet hävdar att de aldrig varit eller kommer att vara The Sisters Of Mercy. Och visst, rent fysiskt kommer de naturligtvis inte att få äran att inta den bleke engelsmannens kropp. Men att musiken (gud vad trötta de måste vara på att höra detta) alltid kommer att jämföras med densammes kan de så länge de brukar sin nuvarande stil aldrig komma ifrån. Om det finns folk som fortfarande suktar efter en ny (läs gammal) platta med Sisters har dessa i Krause åtminstone kommit så nära man kan komma. Själv är jag numera varken särskilt intresserad av systrarna, eller deras många lärjungar. Till Dr Arthur Krauses fördel kan dock nämnas att låtskrivandets förmåga knappast är någon brist hos gruppen. Flera spår, som 'Inhuman Liberty' och den trovärdiga 'Fadime', håller hög standard inom svartrockens ramar.

CD. Paraphrasing the title of the first Sisters Of Mercy album for their debut CD, Dr. Arthur Krause have encapsulated their influences and substance - The opening track ''Inhuman Liberty'' could be straight off the ''Reptile House EP'' and sets the tone of the album - retro, traditional early 80's style Goth - in parts shamelessly early Sisters influenced, but including some gems such as the ballad-like ''Fadime'' where the band come into their own, with a more sophisticated and less obviously derivative song writing style. A remarkable release in this genre and a MUST for any Goth rock fan !

DR. ARTHUR KRAUSE show fantasy with their name – with that the three people form Sweden will win the prize for the strangest self-appellation. But unfortunately the do not show this fantasy in their music on the debut-album Before And After. The band conjures up the spirit of the good old times – and especially of the Sisters Of Mercy. Some of these songs would perfectly fit on “First & Last & Always”. This becomes already apparent on the first song Inhuman Liberty, a midtempo-track with typical 80ies-goth guitars and keyboard-sounds, and in addition a dark voice that sings in the style of Andrew Eldtrich. “Well”, you will think, one song in this manner is okay, there will be others which are more self-contained – but you will get disappointed. This won’t be changed by the fact that the songs alternate in pace: Violence has a little bit more “speed”, Fadime is more a ballad. Only Take Me Hard is different and better: It has more variations and has charm with its angry drums. But besides that this album really sounds dusty and outmoded – I would have like it in the 80ies.

Dr. Arthur Krause - 'Before and After' Heute erreichte und das erste Studioalbum der schwedischen Gothic-Band "Dr. Arthur Krause". Nach der ersten Hörprobe waren wir begeistert: Wie das vorangegangene Promo-Album "Rare Flowers" ist auch auf dieser CD klassischer 80er Gothic-Rock zu finden, wie man ihn heutzutage kaum noch zu hören bekommt (es sei denn man zieht sich die alten Scheiben dieser Epoche rein). Fans von Sisters of Mercy oder Mission werden einfach begeistert sein von der schwedischen Combo und sollten sich dieses Album auf jeden Fall zulegen. FAZIT: Ein wirklich gekonnt zusammengestelltes Gothic-Rock Album, das man Fans der 80er Szene wirklich nur nahelegen kann aber auch unser Nachwuchs sollte ein Ohr auf diesen Silberling haben. Kultur der Gothic-Szene wird auf diesem Album fortgeführt.

Dr. Arthur Krause - 'Before and After' Aus Schweden kommt diese ungewöhnliche Band mit dem ungewöhnlichsten Namen, den ich bis jetzt gehört habe. Die Band Dr. Arthur Krause wurde in Gothenburg im Jahre 2001 ins Leben gerufen von 3 Ausnahme-Musikern. Nach langer Zeit liegt nun das Debütalbum mit dem Titel "Before & After" vor. Freunde von Darkwave und Gothic aus den 80er Jahren werden mit dieser Scheibe ihre wahre Freude haben, denn die Band lässt die glorreichen alten Zeiten wieder auferstehen. Ungewöhnlich wie der Name, so ist auch der Sound! Den Opener "Inhuman Liberty" werden sicher alle Sister Of Mercy Fans ins Herz schließen, denn der Sound gleicht dem zum Verwechseln ähnlich. Typische Keyboardpassagen und Gitarrenläufe aus dem Darkwave Genre der Achtziger werden zu einem melodischen und tanzbaren Klang kombiniert. Dazu macht die wunderbare, düster klingende Stimme den Zeitsprung komplett. "Nastassia" und "Violence" glänzen mit gutem Drumspiel und dominanten Keyboardklängen und immer wieder diese markante Stimme, die durch und durch geht. Der Song "Rare Flowers" weist dicke Parallelen zu The Cure auf, so dass man sich manchmal fragt, welche Band denn nun überhaupt aus den Boxen dröhnt. Perfekt eingefangen wird im Song "Take Me Hard" die Atmosphäre von Dunkelheit und Hoffnung. Das sehr stimmungsvolle Lied "Breaking In Two" strotzt nur so vor Melancholie und Trauer. Langsame Keyboardklänge werden von der klagenden Stimme und von depressiven Gitarren getragen. Eine Ballade, die direkt ins dunkle Herz stößt. Das tut auch der letzte Song, "Dreaming", der durchaus wörtlich zu nehmen ist. Denn ruhige Pianoklänge und die depressiv-traurige Stimme lassen einen dahin scheiden. Ich werde es im Schlusssatz kurz und knapp machen! Dunkle Seelen, die sich Klängen Marke The Cure, Sisters of Mercy oder Joy Division verschrieben haben, müssen einfach diese Platte besitzen! Die Schweden verstehen es perfekt, die alten Zeiten wieder auferstehen zu lassen! Die unverwechselbare Stimme des Namensgebers werdet ihr mit schmachteten Herzen verschlucken! Bei Risiken oder Nebenwirkung fragen sie Dr. Arthur Krause oder ihr Webmagazin! Aber diese wird es sicher nicht geben! Absolut Top, dieses Album!

Wir bekamen heute das aktuelle Demo Album der schwedischen Band "Dr. Arthur Krause" zugesand und es hat uns umgehauen. Wenn wir es nicht besser wüssten, hätten wir gedacht, die Sisters machen wieder weiter im Stiele von "F&L&A". Düstere Gitarren mit typischem Sistersgesang. Aber wer jetzt denk es ist nur ein "Abklatsch" der guten alten Sachen, der liegt weit daneben. "Dr. AK" haben es trotz allem geschafft Ihren eigenen Stil zu finden und müssen sich nicht als eine Kopie bezeichenen lassen. Leider gibt es dieses Album aber nicht zu kaufen... doch trotz alledem, wer die Songs haben möchte kann sich diese auf der Homepage der Künstler herunterladen. Es liegt der komplette Inhalt als MP3 zum Download bereit. Ihr werdet begeistert sein von Ihrer Musik und wir werden bestimmt noch viel von "Dr. AK" zu hören bekommen

Yet another band from Gothenburg Sweden, but they're not another melodic Death-Metal act as you might expect from the region, in fact Dr. Arthur Krause is not metal at all. What we have here is one of the best Goth acts to come around in a long, long time. The band formed in '99, and this is their latest demo CD. What you're going to hear if you get this is old school Sisters Of Mercy, and to a lesser extent, The Mission. If the Sisters' "First And Last And Always" CD holds a special place in your heart, or if you built an alter for it, and regularly sacrifice lesser CDs to it, then you're gonna shit yourself when you hear this. I swear this could easily be sold as the lost Sisters' CD between F&L&A and "Floodland". Great production, catchy dark rhythms, what more could you want? I played this disc about 8 times in a row before I could take it out of the player… simply brilliant. If you like Goth, you need to hear this, it's that simple.

>Gothrock. Klart parodisk och högsr medveten plankning av Sisters of Mercy, det här. Herregud, Dr. Arthur Krause har ju till och med lånat både stjärnan och typsnittet till sin logga. Självklart handlar det då också om riktig klassisk gothrock och faktum är att de tre låtar som finns på denna demo utan problem skulle kunna passera som Sisters-demos från mitten av 80-talet. Så "bra" är de. Sångaren har en mäktig stämma, gitarrerna lägger mattor och trummaskinen har säkert gått på kurs hos Dr Avalanche. Naturligtvis inget som tillför rockhistorien ens ett litet uns, men som kuriosa och tribute-band på en och annan Sisters-convension ska Dr. Arthur Krause inte skämmas för sig.
